Abstract
A survey of blood cholinesterase activities in 249 famers exposed to organophate insecticides and 57 unexposed subjects was made during the summer of 1981. The exposed famers were divided into four groups; asymptomatic farm workers, 59; mild poisoning, 56; moderate, 92; and severe, 42.
The difference of blood cholinesterase activities between the unexposed and asymptomatic groups was slight and of questionable significance to health.
The severity of manifestations parallels the degree of inhibition of blood cholinesterase activities: 50 to 75 percent of the normal value in mild poisoning, 25 to 62.5 percent in moderate poisoning and less than 25 percent in severe poisoning. The severe cases were depressed significantly compared with the mild-to-moderate cases.
In mild poisoning, erturn to the normal level of blood cholinseterase activities required about 1 to 2 weeks, in moderate poisoning, about 4 weeks; in severe poisoning, it required more than 4 weeks.
